City closes Beaconsfield Arena till May 23

Beaconsfield Arena is temporarily closed due to a legionella contamination.

The city of Beaconsfield announced that it shut down its arena after monitoring tests came out positive for legionella contamination.

“Due to a legionella contamination, our condenser has been shut down and the refrigeration turned off,” the city posted on its website.

“Consequently, we cannot maintain the ice.”

On Friday, April 7, a certified independent laboratory informed the city that water samples taken from the arena’s evaporative condenser provided test results indicating higher than normal levels of the Legionella bacteria. Legionella pneumophila is found naturally in most fresh water sources, including lakes, ponds, and rivers. The city then shut down the arena condenser, a process which led to the ice melting, according to a city statement released Wednesday.

With regular spring maintenance currently underway, the city said the arena will re-open on May 23.

The arena is located  at 1974 City lane.

Legionella contamination can possibly lead to legionnaires’ disease, which is a bacterial pneumonia.

Symptoms include pneumonia, fever, cough and headache.
