TransLink to launch vanpool pilot program

TransLink is working on a pilot project that will use vanpools to take workers to and from Metro Vancouver business parks and industrial areas that aren’t well-served by transit.

It will be the first vanpool pilot the transit authority has undertaken.

In its 2017 business plan, TransLink said it wants to attract and serve more customers by expanding mobility options through ride-for-hire, cycling, travel-planning services and a vanpool pilot.

CEO Kevin Desmond said TransLink should provide high-quality, fixed-route rail and bus services, along with HandyDART, but should also look for alternatives that can further shape and complement the existing system. He said vanpooling is a way to help fill in the gaps.

Geoff Cross, TransLink’s vice-president of planning and policy, said he’s heard from mayors across the region that there is a significant number of areas that are hard to access, so more flexible transportation options are needed.

“We continue to evolve what that program might look like,” Cross said.

Cross said they’re working with a couple of major employers and expect to be able to announce details of the pilot project within a few weeks.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said he’s looking forward to hearing more.

“It’s really promising and we’re seeing lots of potential benefit from that,” he said.
