Grizzly Bear 148 captured after charging man in Canmore

Provincial authorities have captured a large female grizzly bear that is believed to have charged a man who was walking with a stroller and two leashed dogs near Canmore on Monday.

Bow Valley Wildsmart reported that Bear 148 was captured late Monday by Fish and Wildlife officials following the incident. Authorities have since decided to release the bear, but the animal could still be euthanized if it returns to Canmore.

Bear 148 has had a number of encounters with people and is believed to be highly reactive to dogs, due to previous encounters with them.

Kim Titchener, a human-wildlife conflict specialist with Bear Safety & More, said Bear 148 isn’t believed to be a “problem bear” but has been involved in previous surprise run-ins with humans.

“This incident Monday was very scary for a parent with a child, and they had a dog with them, which may have been why they were charged,” Titchener said. “But it also might have been because they were very close range and she didn’t realize they were there.”

Titchener said there will need to be more trail closures in the Canmore area to prevent further encounters.

“It’s very concerning. Our grizzly bears are threatened in the province of Alberta. Every bear that gets killed is a major loss to the species. Because she’s female, she’s especially important to the population,” Titchener said.

“We’re going to have to do everything we can to keep her on the landscape.”
