Suburban blaze devastates two homes, scorches another

A fire badly damaged two homes in Calgary’s northwest Sunday morning.

Firefighters received a call around 10 a.m. about a structure fire on the 9900 block of Scurfield Drive N.W. in Scenic Acres.

“When crews arrived they found two homes involved with flames,” said Stu Laird, battalion chief with the Calgary Fire Department.

He said smoke and fire was visible from both roofs. One occupant in each home at the time of the call both exited the houses safely, said Laird.

A cat was also rescued from one of the homes.

One witness saw black smoke filling the sky after a yoga class and drove toward it to see what was going on.

“There was a massive cloud of smoke,” said Sarah Marie Pullman.

“Lots of flames, like four or five fire trucks, a pile of police officers working on getting the fire extinguished.”

She watched the orange flames burn through the roof of one of the homes and heard windows break as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

The fire damaged three homes — one has superficial damage, while the other two face significant structural damage.

Pullman said witnessing the fast response by Calgary’s emergency crews was comforting.

“I’m just thankful to live in a city where there are so many respondents at a time, and to see emergency services perform and do their jobs so well in keeping everybody calm and safe.”

It is unclear how the fire began and investigators were still on scene Sunday afternoon.
