The Montreal SPCA is holding fundraising activities to support its fight against the banning of certain dog breeds, such as pit bulls.
A day-long support rally is being held at the organization’s Jean-Talon St. W headquarters on Saturday.
The SPCA is challenging a by-law passed by the City of Montreal and is trying to raise opposition to a possible provincial bill banning certain dog breeds.
Sophie Gaillard, a lawyer with the SPCA, said the authorities must end their “paranoia” over certain breeds, arguing that aggressiveness in dogs is due to abuse or neglect, not breed.
Gaillard believes that any regulation should focus on those factors instead of the breed.
She said other jurisdictions have adopted measures similar to those taken by the City of Montreal but have not reduced the number or severity of bites.
