England star Ross Barkley pictured with nasty black eye after being punched during ‘unprovoked attack’ in nightclub

ROSS BARKLEY has been pictured with nasty black eye for the first time since being sickeningly attacked in a Merseyside nightclub.

The Everton midfielder, 23, hid his face with dark sunglasses on his way to training on Wednesday morning – but showed off the swelling later that day.

In the footage two men appear to be talking calmly before one of them gets enraged for some reason and throws a huge punch at Barkley.

The England international slumped to the floor, but that was not enough to stem the tide as the attacker launched a parade of further hay-makers.

Looking a little dazed, Barkley manages to get back on his feet after being helped by other revellers.

Barkley’s representative confirmed the midfielder was the victim of an “unprovoked attack by a stranger who approached him”.

Merseyside Police are reviewing the footage, while Everton have confirmed the club are looking into the incident.

A police spokesman said: “Merseyside Police can confirm officers are investigating an assault at a bar in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Monday.
