Theresa May set to make Boris Johnson main face of the Tory campaign in bid to woo Labour Leavers

THERESA May is to make Boris Johnson one of the main faces of the Tory election campaign, scotching claims he has been sidelined.

The mop-haired Foreign Secretary will take centre stage Wednesday as the party’s voice of the ballot box battle on Wednesday.

The charismatic 52-year-old will be deployed to Leave-backing areas in a bid to win round Brexit-backing former Labour voters.

Boris became the biggest face of the Leave campaign during last year’s EU referendum campaign.

Tory critics of Boris claimed he would be sidelined during the six week campaign because of his propensity for gaffes.

There were also fears that he could be a vote loser in constituencies that backed Remain.

But a senior Tory source said: “Of course Boris going to have a big role in the campaign.

He still has the ability to reach voters like few other politicians can on any side.

“His appeal is with Leave voters, so that is where he will be used.”

Home Secretary Amber Rudd, International Development Secretary Priti Patel, Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon and Work and Pensions Secretary Damian Green have also been given leading roles, having won the PM’s trust.

But most Cabinet ministers are still waiting to hear Mrs May’s plans for them.

The PM will brief her top table on her election battle plan during a meeting of the Political Cabinet Tuesday morning.
