BARCELONA star Gerard Pique walked into the lions’ den when he turned up at the Madrid Open.
The stadium may have been full of tennis fans but the Madrid-based public had no time for the central defender from Catalan territory.
Pique did his best to watch the final between David Ferrer and Mikhail Kukushkin only to run the gauntlet of booing and abuse from the crowd.
The umpire had to stop the match when Ferrer was going to serve because he saw Pique standing up- and that was enough for the locals to let rip at the Catalan.
“Hala Madrid!” they shouted whilst also insulting him.
Pique clearly wasn’t in the mood to respond to the criticism and he continued to watch Ferrer claim the title with a 2-6, 7-6, 6 -4 victory.
Perhaps many of the tennis fans knew that Pique has been vocally critical of Real Madrid over the years, accusing them of lacking values.
In the build-up to El Clasico last month, Pique became embroiled in a pre-match spat with Real captain Sergio Ramos.
Despite being team-mates for Spain, the two went at it each other before Barcelona stunned Real at the Bernabeu.
And Daniele Ospina, wife of James Rodriguez, claimed Pique has a Real shirt at home.
She insisted Pique's son Milan owns a shirt with her husband's name on the back.
