Among the pundits who gave him a kicking was a certain Eddie Jones, then Japan coach, who slaughtered him in a newspaper column.
And Jones’ first move as boss was to make Dylan Hartley skipper instead.
Robshaw, 30, admitted: “I probably didn’t expect to be in this position again post-World Cup with what Eddie said about me.
“But straight after that, we had a good meeting and he let me know where I stood.
“Coming into the set-up and not being captain was fine. This is Dylan’s team but George and I have the opportunity to try to help the squad move forward.”
Hartley misses Sunday after playing in Northampton’s Champions Cup play-off against Stade Francais tonight.
Jones also switched Robshaw from No 7 to blindside flanker and the Quins man has never looked back.

The Aussie said: “I said he was a good player — that was the best column I ever wrote.
“Chris has a leadership role when we have our best players available.
“I don’t think he is the best bloke at being at the front of the bus but he is a very good bloke in the middle of the bus ensuring the front of the bus works with the back of the bus. Those leaders are super-important.”
