Nine nights were sold out in April and May, with customers giving “overwhelmingly positive feedback” over the £35-a-head three-course meal.

Karen Himsworth, manager of Waitrose Cookery School which provided the chefs, said: “There is a lot for us to consider before we decide if we can take it forward, but the experience has been incredibly encouraging.”

She said not all branches had space for a supper club and location would be an important factor.

She added: “All our stores are different, so we need to think about things such as menu choice.”

The supper clubs, which have also been trialled at Newbury, Berks, and Salisbury, Wilts, featured mood lighting and jazz.
