There’s not much to treasure from the highly anticipated Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge

AS two zombie great whites snap at Johnny Depp’s tricorn hat, it is tempting to suggest Pirates Of The Caribbean has jumped the shark.

But, of course, that happened a long time ago in this multibillion-pound franchise.

Arguably, it was that head-scratching scene involving crabs in the third instalment, although there are plenty of other contenders.

In many ways, it is the anarchic refusal of Pirates to obey the rules of physics or plotting that make it so entertaining. Jumping sharks are what people pay to see.

An opening action sequence — where not only a safe but the whole bank house is pulled through the streets by Captain Jack Sparrow’s gang — is the kind of slapstick stunt Buster Keaton would have made if he had a £245million budget.

Equally, a beautiful scene near the end, on a glittering island that mirrors all the stars in the heavens, is far more poetic than most blockbusters dare to be.

Unfortunately, giving directors the chance to let their imaginations run riot can lead to tiring excess and that is what happens in this fifth episode of the series.

An unfunny shotgun-wedding scene and the bumbling Brit baddies should have been thrown overboard to get this story on a more even keel.

There are just too many people chasing Poseidon’s magical Trident.

The Royal Navy, Sparrow, a young astronomer called Carina Smyth, Will Turner’s son Henry, the evil ghost captain Salazar and Captain Barbossa are all running after the prize.

Apart from Jack, the only one of these characters who had me really rooting for them was Carina, played by ex-Skins actress Kaya Scodelario.

Like the theme-park ride Pirates Of The Caribbean is based on, the movie is fun but you will be happy to get off at the end.
