Olson, Lowrie power A’s past Red Sox

BOSTON – Jed Lowrie finished a home run short of the cycle, and Matt Olson hit his 10th home run in his past 15 games to power the A’s to a 7-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

The A’s offense broke out a day after combining for one run on just three hits in an 11-1 loss to open the three-game series.

The Athletics, who showed up in Boston fresh off a four-game sweep of the Houston Astros that saw the team score 41 runs, wasted no time getting to Red Sox starter Doug Fister for four runs in the first inning and then two more in the third to avoid clinching their third straight losing season.

Olson’s blast, which was his league-leading 14th since the All-Star Break, came in the first inning with Khris Davis aboard. It helped pin an early lead on Jharel Cotton, who bobbed and weaved his way through five up-and-down innings to record his eighth win of the season.

Cotton, who was making his first career appearance at Fenway Park, allowed three runs and scattered six hits. He walked two and struck out three.

The Athletics one-through-five batters finished 7-for-15 with six runs scored and five knocked in.

Liam Hendriks, Daniel Coulombe, Ryan Dull, Chris Hatcher and Blake Treinen combined to toss four scoreless innings of relief to preserve the win, which snapped an eight-game road-losing streak for the Athletics, who now lead the season series against the Red Sox 4-2.

The win also snapped a seven-game losing streak for Oakland at Fenway Park that had seen it outscored, 66-24.

The A’s will look to make it two wins in a row against the American League East leaders in the series finale on Thursday afternoon before continuing their nine-game road trip in Philadelphia on Friday night.
