Brazilian soccer referee pulled out a gun on player in the middle of a match

Disagreements with soccer officials can often turn violent in the lower levels of Brazilian soccer, but one referee had no tolerance for an alleged punch from a player.

According to Mirror.uk, Brazilian referee Camilo Eustáquio de Souza retrieved a handgun and brought it onto the pitch after a player, Marcos Lopes Vieira, got into a physical altercation with the referee. The incident was captured on video.

When Vieira saw that de Souza was going for a weapon, the player fled the stadium in Passos, Brazil, leaping over a fence.

De Souza, who is a police officer, told the press at the amateur match that he had no intention of using his weapon despite receiving a black eye from the punch.

“My actions were not an exaggeration; the exaggeration was down to the behavior of the player. I was in charge of the game and to bring things under control I made the decision to act in my capacity as a police officer and arrest a citizen who assaulted me.”

This wasn’t the first time a Brazilian referee brought a gun onto the field. It happened in 2015 when another police officer working as a referee pulled out a handgun on players.
